How is a dual layer dildo core different compared to regular realistic dildos, especially when they look the same and have similar price points? Is it worth it? Do they actually feel like the real thing? So many questions to answer, so let's begin!
What is a Dual Density Dildo?
The dual density dildo is a type of realistic dildo comprised of two layers of material. The interior layer is more dense while the outer layer is more malleable and often can move independently over the core, also known as “sliding skin dildo”. The purpose of this double layer dildo is to replicate the feel of an erect penis.
Watch the video demo to see what happens when I squish a dual density dildo with my hand:
You can see the top layer that can be compressed separately from the interior layer. The entire shaft isn't squishy, only the top layer smooshes between my fingers. The core remains sturdy.
Single Density vs. Dual Density
There are two different types of realistic dildos: The dual density dildo and the single density dildo.
- Single Density Dildos are made to LOOK real. - These dildos are made of materials that are a bit on the rigid side (typically PVC or rubber) that are easier to insert and good for strap-on use & lively or active fantasy sex.
- Dual Density Dildos are made to FEEL real. - These are made of soft & pliable materials (typically TPR & TPE) that are best for slow and gentle sex, but close your eyes and you'll never know it's not a real penis.
If you're looking for the most realistic feeling dildo, choose a dual layer dildo. It truly is magical how the stacked layers mimic the true feel of an erect penis.
How are Dual Layer Dildos Made?
Let's have a quick erection anatomy lesson first: The penis is comprised of multiple layers of sponge-like tissue. When sexually stimulated, the tissue fills with blood which firms the tissue and causes the penis to become erect over the muscles which feel more dense inside compared to the tissue over top.
Sex toy manufacturers were quick to realize that by replicating this body process through varying densities on the dildo shaft, the end result is the best realistic dildo that feels incredibly life like, exactly like an erect penis.
Dual density dildos are made by adding a softer layer over the existing supportive core inside. This is a more intensive manufacturing process which is why dual layer toys tend to be more expensive, but you get what you pay for and these dildos are our best sellers, they really do feel like a real penis.

What are They Made Of?
Dual density dildos are made of one of three materials:
- Silicone
- TPE - Thermoplastic Elastomer
- TPR - Thermoplastic Rubber
Which material is best? Honestly, they are all really good. In fact, if you were to ignore the printing on the box, you would hardly be able to determine the material on your own because they feel so similar to the touch.
Silicone sex toys tend to be more expensive while TPE and TPR sex toys are cheaper options, but not lacking in quality. If you are shopping for sex toys on a budget, by all means pick one of the latter sex toy materials, you'll still be one very happy lady.

Quality Costs More
For sex toy manufacturers to craft a dildo with dual layer skin, it's literally two separate process to layer the different materials over top of each other. Furthermore, these two layers need to be molded and blended so that the user cannot distinguish where one ends and the other begins.
To make a realistic rubber penis with balls is a rather simple process for a sex toy manufacturer - just pour liquid rubber or silicone into a pre-set mold and let it set.
The dual layer dildo is much more complex in both materials and hand-made time requirements. Labor costs more, quality materials cost more and this explains why most dual density dildos are twice the price (or more) compared to regular rubber or silicone dildos.
How to Properly Care for Your Dildo
Lubricant is important with any sex toys, but especially with delicate materials like real skin dildos. Friction will cause it to tear or create micro holes in the surface that can spread and dimple the surface.
We have a few more care tips to keep your prized toy in tip-top shape primed and ready for sexual pleasure for years to come:
- Use plenty of lube, but pick water based lubricants only. Silicone based formulas can melt the material. Also make sure to clean and wash it properly with sex toy cleaner and pat dry with a lint free towel before storing.
- A soft skin-like surface may dry out over time, especially if you live in a dry climate. You'll see tiny cracks appear in the surface. You want to prevent this from happening as the micro cracks will spread and tear over time.
- You can sprinkle talcum powder over the surface to preserve moisture if you plan on storing the dildo for extended periods of time (ie more than 2 months). Make sure to wash off the talc powder really well before using.
- Use a proper dildo cleaner. With most other types of dildos it is totally okay to use antibacterial hand soap, but in this case, dual skin dildos are too delicate for these harsh soaps. Dildo cleaners are made specifically to be used with gentle sex toy materials like this.
- Never use silicone based lube with dual density silicone dildos. The silicone compounds will gradually blend together over time deforming the skin on the surface. This won't permanently ruin your toy, but it sill not look as nice anymore (the surface will look like it's melting). Only use water-based lube.
