How to Clean a Butt Plug: Cleaning Your Anal Sex Toys

Last Updated on March 30, 2023

Butt plugs are amazing. Let’s be honest though, it’s one sex toy where hygiene is exceptionally important. Your favorite butt plug brings you great pleasure, but we all know with great pleasure comes great responsibility. Any anal plug or butt toy can harbor germs and all that freak stuff, so you'll need to properly sanitize it after every use.

It is key that you keep your butt plugs clean for safe play and pleasure. To help with that, we’re providing this easy to follow cleaning guide. Feel free to apply these tips to any other anal toy you own as well. Now it's time to learn how to clean a butt plug:

Why is Cleaning Your Butt Plug so Important?

It may be a bit uncomfortable to consider, but the truth is that there is always bacteria inside your rectum. It doesn’t matter how clean and sanitary you are. You can help keep things clean with a bit of anal preparation, but that doesn’t get rid of every microscopic particle.

Yes we all know how to clean a dildo properly without issue, but somehow get squeamish when it comes to touching anal toys.

It’s just there. If you're using anal toys with your partner for pegging sex, it's extra important to sanitize things because other people are handling your germs, and it can become quite unsanitary.

That bacteria will transfer to your toy when you use it. If you don’t clean and disinfect your butt plug, that bacteria can spread. Worse, it can breed and produce waste. This can be harmful. You must clean it immediately after use. To give you the best instructions to clean the style of anal sex toy you bought, this guide will address porous and non-porous types.

  1. After use, rinse with hot water under a faucet.
  2. Wash with an antibacterial sex toy cleaner.
  3. Lather well with your fingers.
  4. Rinse completely inder hot water.
  5. Pat dry with a lint free cloth before storing.
  6. Store the toy in the original packaging it came in.

Jelly Butt Plug

If your tool is made from jelly, elastomer, jelly, hard plastic, neoprene, nylon, an expanding anal toy or other similar materials, it is porous. To be sure, read the label on the box. It will tell you what the material is. If it doesn’t specify whether it is porous, look the material up online. You should be able to find out.

How to clean a butt plug? If you do have a porous plug, cleaning it is quite simple. Just use a mild soap with lukewarm water. Just remember that this must be done immediately after use. How to clean the inflatable butt plug - specific tips are located here.

Cleaning Vibrating Butt Plugs

When cleaning a butt plug vibrator make sure to avoid getting water inside the battery compartment. Double check to see if it is waterproof before submerging in your sink. You can tell by seeing a small rubber O ring just underneath the part where the cap screws on.

If it is not waterproof, then rinse the shaft only. Corded controller units are almost never waterproof so do not get water on the controller unit. Set the controller on your counter while washing the anal plug to make sure you don't accidentally get it under water.

Bad news. If you forget, there’s really no safe way to save your plug. Dangerous bacteria can grow and get inside the material. That cannot be safely cleaned. Just throw your plug away, and buy a new one.

When you clean your plug, don’t use abrasive cleaners or scrubbers. You can introduce nicks and scratches into your plug. This makes it even easier for bacteria to get inside. Use a toy cleaner that is easy on gentle surfaces, such as Aloe sex toy cleaner.

How to Clean Non-Porous Butt Plugs

If your device is made from stainless steel, silicone, glass, or similar materials it is non-porous. As always, double check the label. These you will clean according to the materials. If it is is heat-resistant, you can submerge it in boiling water for about 10 minutes. Then, allow them to cool.

Glass Butt Plug

Glass anal toys & plugs are truly the only heat resistant, completely non-porous material. It is the only one that can be shared too, a testament to now sanitary they actually are. If the material isn’t heat-resistant, or you aren’t sure if it is, revert to using soap and lukewarm water. If you do wash a plug that isn’t completely heat-resistant, it could warp.

Cleaning Butt Plugs With Tails Attached

Butt plugs with tails attached allow you to add some fun and fantasy to your anal play. These must also be cleaned. Your first step is to determine if you have a real fur tail, or faux fur. If it’s real, be very careful in handling the cleaning process.

If you are working with real animal fur, do not submerge or drench it. If you do, the weight the water adds could cause the tail to snap. Use a damp cloth instead. It should be soaked with a mild soap, then rung out. Dab the tail. Be careful not to let it get too wet. You can use a hair-dryer on the lowest heat setting. Do not hang it to dry.

If your tail is faux fur, go ahead and submerge it to wash it with soap. Be gentle with it, though. You could lose bits of fur over time, and end up with a very sparse looking tail. When your tails are dry, brush them out. This will help them maintain their shape.

Of course, manufacturers instructions always override any other advice. The company that makes your tail understands what will keep it clean, in healthy shape, and prevent any color fading.
